NEC aspires to play a part in enriching society by delivering innovation through its business activities. We are deeply aware that our business activities are premised on relationships with many stakeholders, including customers, shareholders and other investors, business partners, the community at large and employees. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) at NEC means achieving sustainable growth together with society by earning the trust of all stakeholders as we create and provide value through a diverse array of business activities.
At NEC, we consider CSR (*) initiatives to be inseparable from corporate activities. We aim to ensure the sustainable development of society and the NEC Group by implementing The NEC Way.
It is crucial that companies recognize that their existence is premised on society, and at the same time is part and parcel of the global environment that is precious to all forms of life on the earth. NEC seeks to realize "an information society friendly to humans and the earth," as set forth in the NEC Group Vision 2017 based on its Corporate Philosophy. To this end, in the course of daily operations, every employee will rigorously adhere to corporate ethics and compliance standards, practice the NEC Group Core Values (what we value and base our behavior on), and help solve issues faced by customers and society.
Our important responsibilities also include ensuring full accountability through the active disclosure of information on the results of our CSR initiatives and related issues, and communicating with stakeholders to improve our corporate activities and build trust.
NEC considers CSR-driven management to be management based on the foregoing approaches.
(*) CSR = Corporate Social Responsibility
In fiscal 2010, we formulated the NEC Group Management Policy, which sets forth basic approaches and rules that must be shared by the NEC Group, with the aim of establishing Group-wide and Global consolidated management foundations.
The entire NEC Group will share and implement The NEC Way and the NEC Group Management Policy, as the foundations for promoting CSR management. The NEC Group Management Policy contains rules for implementing The NEC Way in the course of executing actual business operations.

Background
The biggest scavengers’ community is in the Final Waste Disposal site at Bantar Gebang, Bekasi. They are living under standard of living situation with very low income in very bad quality environment. Bantar Gebang contributes 6,000 tones of commercial and organic waste. Lately the people of Bantar Gebang Final Waste Disposal realize that how important education is and how they can raise up from their recent jobs to other valuable occupation in the middle of tones of waste.
Meanwhile, majority of the people in Bantar Gebang purchased gas 3 kg to power its gas ranges. Although this is a cost that many people in the developed world could afford, a family in Bantar Gebang that used more than one tank per month could not likely pay for the fuel to cook its food. Some of them might be forced to supplement their gas with firewood. Such a practice was also harmful in the short-term, as the firewood was burned in the kitchen and often ignited with plastics and rubbers, which when burned give off carcinogenic dioxins. By providing biogas, we encourage them to leave conservative energy and change into biogas as an alternative energy which more efficient, effective, safe and clean. Further, the needs of electricity power to support their daily living also become a problem due to their low income. As a result, the people in Bantar Gebang were torn between financial, environmental, and health concerns.

Background
Bantargebang Final Waste Disposal site has operated in 1989. In planning that was arranged on 1987/1988, this site was engineered as sanitary landfill method. But the actual, it just a semi opening dumping method. It is caused many problems in around the site. For instance, it caused ground water pollution from leach ate (among 20 well only 1 in good condition), heavy metallic pollution. On rainy season like this moment, it raised bad smelt and many fly and rats nest there. On dry season, it caused waste burning that smog impact to air pollution and bad visibility to the residential in Bekasi.
Community around the Final Waste Disposal site in Bantargebang, Bekasi lives under standard of living situation and dirty environment. Children under seventeen are the major citizen in this area. Their parent majority work as Waste Picker or Pemulung. Nature, education and health problems such as lack of public library or education facilities, environment and health problems are very serious matters to be made up.
Other matter is the fact that the Final Waste Disposal site in Bantargebang, Bekasi contributes about 6,000 tones of commercial waste per day, a part of them (around 1,500 tones) coming from vegetables and fruit garbage. But the Waste Picker usually only put plastic wastes. They still do not know vegetables and fruits waste can be recycled as fertilizer and they can produce it to be sold outside. We trained the community and children at this site in making fertilizer from vegetables and fruit garbage. Community is one of company’s stakeholders, and we have to show our responsibility to develop the community.
